Much has been written about flirting and some people make good money teaching others how to flirt. The key to the art of flirting involves learning how to spot and interpret non-verbal signals. Anyone who is oblivious to another person’s reactions to flirtatious advances will not get very far. It’s important to know, first of all, whether the person you’d like to flirt with is interested in flirting with you. Women, in particular, tend to give off predominantly non-verbal signals, as traditionally it’s the men who make the first move. In polite society, things are often less than overt and signals could be tiny – standing a bit too close, laughing a little bit too much or putting a hand on the man’s arm or shoulder. On the other hand, signals that someone is not interested in physical closeness could also be quite small – tensing up, moving slightly away or speaking in a manner or tone that could imply a desire to be elsewhere. Trying to interact with someone while simultaneously trying to take in non-verbal signals can be hard. Some people can do it without thinking, but if you’re the sort of person who needs to approach things intellectually rather than intuitively, then you’ll need to go a little bit more slowly. At the end of the day, there is nothing more to flirting that simply having a conversation with someone you like. Rather than try too hard to imitate people who are so called “natural born flirters” by coming up with jokes and chat up lines or by attempting to tease the object of your affections, it’s always best to simply be yourself and just talk to the person in front of you, noting the way they react to what you’re saying.
